The project

Located in Hoofddorp, this project covers approximately 675 m². Originally designed in the 90s, the building’s interior was outdated and ready for a renewal. Firm Architects completely stripped the building and, emphasizing sustainability, reused materials as much as possible. The new design aimed to transform the office into a modern workspace of the future, tailored to the diverse needs of APPM. From open office spaces and focus areas to large meeting rooms, everything was developed in consultation with APPM. The building features a natural flow along the entire facade, with central volumes creating different enclosed spaces.

The APPM office is a tribute to the Dutch landscape, smartly integrating architectural innovation with APPM’s mission of ‘making the Netherlands more beautiful’. With this mission at its core, we explored what this vision means for APPM: innovation and improvement. Inspired by the Netherlands’ landscape – water, clay, and vegetation – these elements reflect the subjects that APPM advises on: major infrastructure and ecological issues in the Netherlands.

The design

This concept is clearly reflected in the choice of materials and layout. Water, clay, and vegetation are seamlessly integrated into both the structure and function of the building. Central to the design is a versatile space nestled between brick walls, providing stability while honouring traditional Dutch architecture. The use of clay – in the form of bricks – is a testament to Dutch ingenuity.

Materials and durability

The furnishing and renovation of the APPM office prioritise sustainability, with custom elements crafted using Ecoplex and formaldehyde-free adhesives. Cork is used for furniture like benches and wall coverings due to its sustainable nature.

Reflective surfaces and silver finishes in the office highlight water’s role in Dutch landscapes, enhancing natural light presence. The flooring transition from FORBO marmoleum to EGE floors made from recycled fishing nets symbolises sustainability and the maritime theme, with a gradient depicting wave layers.

Terracotta-toned brick walls, produced by Stonecycle from recycled materials, emphasise traditional Dutch building materials. Planters with reed elements integrate nature into meeting spaces, along with natural fibers like sisal connecting to the Dutch landscape’s vegetative aspects.

Additionally, the building is equipped with solar panels and heat pumps. The indoor climate was addressed with sun shading and improved air quality, supported by the natural moisture regulation of the brick walls due to their clay properties.

Contributing to reducing the office’s ecological footprint and supporting APPM’s sustainability goals.
